The MHP preamplifier family is happy to announce that there is a new product added to it. In addition to the traditional preamplifiers of the MHP and MHP PRO series, there is now also the MHP S series. What is the difference between the various MHP preamplifier series?
Let's first look at the technical data using the 144 MHz preamplifiers as an example.
The heart of the MHP series is the long-used LNA 200 in the current version. That is why the technical data of the devices is very similar. All preamplifiers are in the same weatherproof mast housing. So what is the difference between the series? It is noticeable that the transmittable power, the insertion loss and the current consumption differ. The power supply is also different.
Different relays are installed in the preamplifiers. In the classic MHP series, well-known coaxial relays from Tohtsu are used. The MHP PRO has two high-quality coaxial relays from Radiall with N connectors. In the MHP-S series, G2RL-1 power relays from OMRON are used. This explains the different current consumption and transmission loss in the TX case.
The MHP-S preamplifiers can be powered via both the coaxial cable and the built-in UHF socket. This makes them very flexible because there is now finally an MHP available that can handle both types of powering. Another advantage is the low power consumption of just 170mA. This means that they work perfectly with devices such as the ICOM IC-9700 or the Yaesu FT-847. The remote power switch built into these devices can only supply currents of up to approx. 500mA. There are MHP-S preamplifiers only for 6m, 4m and 2m, not for 70 cm. For long runs in FM (>3 min) you should reduce the transmission power so that the relays do not overheat.
In contrast to the preamplifiers of the SP series, the devices of the MHP series are also suitable for power amplifiers in the 1 kW class such as the BEKO HLV 1000.In the end you have to decide for yourself which MHP preamplifier suits the station you are using and your interests. In any case, all MHP preamplifiers are a very good addition to a VHF/UHF amateur radio station.
